I was looking at my blog stats the other day after noticing that my organic traffic has dropped by two-thirds for some unknown reason – yeah, thanks for that Google. Although pretty bloody annoying for someone making money online, my eyes were drawn to something else which made me feel better – my all time views had surpassed one million!
One. Fecking. Million. How crazy is that? As the name suggests, that means a single page from any of those on my blog has been loaded over one million times. Even when you consider 800,000 of that is due to my Mum and another 100,000 is spam bots promising Viagra and foreign lottery wins, that’s still a pretty big – and very humbling – number!
When I started The DADventurer back in the summer of 2014, never in my wildest dreams did I expect it to get to this point. I was ecstatic – and assumed I’d achieved online fame – when my daily views reached double figures. Adding significantly more 0’s onto those page views was unfathomable.
But, somehow, here we are. For all intents and purposes, I’m a blogging millionaire. I may not have the cash in the bank to prove it, but I do have a little stat counter on the back end of my blog showing the numbers. If we were to all seriously ask ourselves that question, I’m pretty sure everyone would prefer the views to actual money…
As I’m unlikely to hit a milestone as significant as this ever again, I thought I’d take a moment to say a simple “thanks”. Thanks to anyone over the past 5.5 years who has visited the blog. Whether that’s been for a bit of light relief, practical advice, product reviews or because you clicked by mistake, your online visit has been noticed and appreciated. You are one in a million. Literally.
I’m well aware that I don’t blog as much as I used to, and when I do, it’s likely to be reviews rather than the lighthearted, random stuff I wrote back in my heyday when I was regarded as the UK’s no. 1 Dad Blogger! I’d like to go back to that, but things change.
Truth be told, a general lack of time as a dad of two, growing concerns about online privacy as the kids get older and a mild case of blogger burnout after multiple years of stringent effort, means that the blog has been somewhat neglected. It’s still around though and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon – mainly because I bought the domain name for four years when I last renewed!
The blogging towel has been nearly thrown in on multiple occasions, but unlike Deontay Wilder, I’m still (just about) fighting back. And I’m proud of that. Not in a big headed, look at me kind of way.
More of a I’m proud that I started something from scratch, that I put in a hell of a lot of effort , that I managed to turn this blogger thang into a job I could do as a stay-at-home dad and that I can now celebrate something crazy like one million blog views. Thanks for being part of that journey.
As they say in cricket*, I guess I’m currently one million not out, although it’s fair to say that I’m probably approaching my final over!
* At least I think they say this kind of thing, I don’t really like cricket. If not, then feel free to insert your own sporting metaphor.
