Despite identifying as a blogger and the fact that you’re reading this on a blog, I very rarely write about blogging things. I’m going to make an exception with this post though because I have some exciting news – well, for me at least. Media monitoring experts Vuelio released their top 10 UK Dad Blogger list 2018 and somehow I’ve been named number 1. Hurrah!
This was a huge surprise – not least because I’ve not been on top since ‘Beetle’ was born, ba dum tshh. I’m no stranger to the Vuelio list, having been ranked number 2 in 2016 and number 3 in 2017, but truth be told, I wasn’t expecting to be ranked number 1 – this year, or ever. I was more than happy just featuring on the list for a third consecutive year.
Since our little lad was born, the blog has taken a bit of a back seat – I’m only really working on it two days per week, I barely manage to publish one post per week and I’m not as active on social media.
There’s also a huge amount of dad blogging talent around at the moment, both in terms of established and newbie dad bloggers – just check out the full list to see some of them. I therefore expected a decline – not on the same level as my beloved Aston Villa, but maybe more akin to West Ham.
So why does this matter, Dave? Well, ultimately, it’s recognition, isn’t it? I’ve written about being a dad for nearly four years now, so to be recognised as “the daddy of daddy bloggers” (Vuelio’s words, not mine!) is pretty cool.
It shows that the effort has been worth it and that more people than just my mum like what I do – although, let’s be fair, she’s obliged to say she likes what I do even if it involved smearing faeces on the wall and calling it modern art.
The thing is, Vuelio’s list actually means something to me. It’s one of the very few blogging rankings out there that’s based on a sound methodology with robust metrics, so it’s the main list I look out for each year.
There’s plenty of other lists and rankings out there, but most of these need to be taken with a pinch of salt – some are based on little more than a quick Google for the word “dad blogger”, then rewarding that person with a blog badge in the hope of getting a backlink. Me, cynical, never?! In fact, I think I was once named one of the top 100 mummy bloggers, which just goes to show some of the shite out there.
Vuelio is different though. The company is ingrained in all forms of media, such as PR, Communications, Pubic Affairs, Press and Social Influences. In fact, they supposedly own the UK’s biggest influencer database of bloggers, vloggers, Instagrammers and journalists, so they kind of know what they’re talking about. Well, at least I thought so until they said I was numero uno…
As such, getting recognition like this from a company that matters, means something to me. It’s not the be-all and end-all, but it’s definitely a nice bonus – a bit like winning the Golden Boot, just because you so happen to have scored the most goals.
Just like in any job – and blogging is my job after all – getting a pat on the back, achieving something and being rewarded for your hard work is always a nice feeling. In reality, it doesn’t change much apart from the fact I can stop strangers in the street and say “Hey, you. Don’t you know who I am? I’m the UK’s number 1 daddy blogger. Capeesh?”
I jest, of course – I’d have no reason to tell them as they’d already recognise me…coming back to reality, this post isn’t designed as a brag or to stroke my own ego. Some people may laugh, take the piss or say I’m taking this ‘accolade’ way too seriously – fair enough. For me though, it does matter and I’m appreciate of it. Do I agree with my position? Hell no – but I ain’t going to argue it!
So, thanks to everyone that reads, likes, comments and shares – it’s hugely appreciated. If you didn’t interact, then this would be a pretty lonely and depressing gig. Also, a big shout out to everyone else on the Vuelio top 10 UK Dad Blogger list.
Finally, in a totally humble brag but not a humble brag way, let me leave you with the pop rock stylings of Imagine Dragons who sum things up pretty well – although I’ve had to make a few edits to ensure accuracy:
“Cause I’m on top of the [dad blogging world according to Vuelio] world, ‘ey
I’m on top of the [dad blogging world according to Vuelio] world, ‘ey
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ey
Been holding it in for a while, ‘ey
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since
a child [I started blogging four years ago]
I’m on top of the [dad blogging world according to Vuelio] world”
