Psssst…I have some exciting news. No, it’s nothing to do with the announcement of a little bundle of joy, although to be fair, it is kind of related to the act of making one…
Instead, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve teamed up with sleep experts Silentnight as one of their ambassadors for 2016. This means that I’ll be working closely with them throughout the year on some very exciting snooze-based projects which I’ll be sharing on the blog.
The first of which is this post – a review of one of the new Silentnight Miraform mattresses and beds. Launched at the end of last year, the Miraform is an innovative spring-free mattress designed to provide unsurpassed pressure relief and support for a great night’s sleep. Sounds pretty awesome, eh?
We bought a new bed when we moved in to our house 5.5 years ago, so although we didn’t *need* a new bed, the opportunity to try out a Miraform mattress was one we couldn’t ignore. Not only would this be a massive upgrade on our existing bed, but we’ve been talking for a while now about putting a proper bed into our ‘games room’ as a comfier alternative to the air bed when friends / family stay over. We therefore got a new bed and our old one could be moved into the ‘games room’ for guests. Win win!
We had a look at the different Silentnight mattress, bed, headboard and colour options on offer (more about these below), before deciding on a king size Miraform Inspired Choice (medium / firm) in ‘coffee’ with a four drawer divan bed and Matisse headboard.
After sleeping in the bed for a few weeks, below is my initial review of our experiences with the Miraform mattress. However, first, how about a quick video of me talking about and demonstrating the bed…?

Our bed was delivered about two weeks after we placed our order, which gave us enough time to move our old bed to the ‘games room’ and give the carpet a quick once over with a carpet cleaner. As part of the delivery, the mattress, divan base (in two sections) and headboard were taken upstairs to our bedroom and assembled by the delivery guys.
It was a bit of a tight squeeze getting the mattress up the stairs, but they managed in the end – no doubt assisted by Toddler L’s supervisory skills. Delivery and assembly probably took just shy of an hour, and because it was all done by the delivery guys, it made a welcome change from me having to get my screwdrivers out to assemble it myself. However, I did end up having to reattach the headboard as this had been put on too low, meaning the mattress hung over the end of the base – this was only a five minute job though.
My initial impressions of the bed were very good. Despite being a King size (150cm x 200cm), I was surprised at how well it fitted in the room, which was a slight worry in advance. Our old mattress was a Double, but it came with a wooden bed frame which significantly increased the size of the bed – in fact, it turned our Double into the size of a King. With the Miraform though, the base is the same size as the mattress, meaning that we now have a larger mattress with the same footprint as our old bed.
I also really liked the colour and thought it worked perfectly in our room. We chose ‘coffee’ – there’s also the option of slate, heather, ebony, cornflower and sandstone – however it is actually a very subtle brown which can sometimes look grey. Either way, it fits in perfectly with our décor.
The mattress we chose was the Miraform Inspired Choice, which is described as a medium / firm (3) – there’s also the options of the Opulent (medium / 2) and Exquisite (Firm / 4). The mattress is spring free, instead being made from a layer of Geltex and dual layer of Miraform technology, which helps with breathability and uses teardrop cavities to create zoned and targeted support.
I could also talk about innovative zoning for perfect spinal alignment, high-density foam reducing pressure points, micro-cavities and channels to increase air circulation and edge to edge support, but I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what they mean or how to go about testing them without a PhD in sleep.
What I can say though is that it creates a hugely comfortable place to sleep and neither the missus or I have had a bad night’s sleep. The mattress is definitely firmer than our last, which had a layer of memory foam on top, but we’ve had no issues in making the switch. Although the missus and I aren’t the biggest of people, having the extra space of a King compared to a Double is pretty awesome too – although I’m still often accused of taking up too much room during the night!
Something I’m been particularly impressed with is the Purotex washable cover which covers the mattress. This can be easily zipped off so that it can be washed in order to help with cleanliness and the elimination of dust mites. We’ve not washed the cover yet having only had the bed a few weeks, but this definitely appears to be a great idea and something I’ve not seen before.
Since having a kid, we’re finding that storage space is at a premium, particularly as the spare room became the nursery. As such, we decided to opt for the divan bed with the four drawer option, although you can have no drawers or two drawers if you wish.
This effectively means that the Miraform mattress sits on top of two separate bases which include four integrated drawers. I’ve been very impressed with these drawers – they are actually a lot bigger than you’d imagine, are solidly made and pull out / push in really smoothly. The perfect place for storing sheets, towels, shoes and other random crap.
We chose the Matisse headboard to go with our bed. Made from a padded upholstery and in the same ‘coffee’ colour as the divan, I think it goes really well with the rest of the bed and look of our bedroom. We had a choice of four other headboards too – Goya, Trevino, Allegro and Renoir – however we felt that the first three were too elaborate and fussy, whereas the last was a bit too plain.
Instead, the Matisse headboard is relatively simple so as not to distract, but the curve design adds some interest. Who doesn’t like curves in the bedroom?! It’s also the same width as the mattress, whereas some of the other headboards increased the footprint of the bed which we didn’t want.
We even splashed out and bought some some new bedding to go with our pretty bed. I know, proper wild! I think the end result is a great looking bed which definitely improves the aesthetics of our bedroom. I’m also really relieved to get rid of our old wooden bed frame as both the missus and I have given ourselves dead legs when getting up in the night to see to Toddler L by walking into the sharp edges.
The price of our bed – a king size, four drawer, medium / firm Miraform Inspired Choice in ‘coffee’ – would be £1,799.99 from Benson For Beds. Obviously there are multiple different configurations of the Miraform beds, ranging from size, to mattress firmness, to colour to storage options, so the cost would move up or down as a result. In addition, we went with a Matisse headboard in ‘coffee’ which would add an additional £119.99 to the price.
At just under £2,000, there’s no question that this is a significant outlay. However, I’m a firm (no pun intended) believer that if you want the best, then you have to pay for it. Sure, you can buy cheaper beds and mattresses out there, but a lower price is always going to result in a lesser quality. If you’re looking to spend this kind of money on a bed, then I can thoroughly recommend the Miraform.
We’re really chuffed with our Miraform Inspired Choice mattress and bed. Most importantly, it is comfortable and neither the missus or I have had a bad night’s sleep since we got it. It is definitely firmer than our last mattress, but this hasn’t negatively impacted our sleep. In fact, I’d say we are both sleeping better.
But that’s not all. The inclusion of the four integrated drawers mean that we now have additional storage space, whilst the upgrade from Double to King, without increasing the footprint of the bed, is pretty awesome. I also like the fact that the mattress has a removable cover which can be washed, and that you have a choice as to how you want to personalise the bed – different colours, drawer options, headboards etc.
Everything about the bed screams quality – from the material to the detailing – and this is reflected in the price. However, if you want a fantastic mattress / bed, and you have the money, then you can’t go wrong with this Silentnight Miraform. All of this chat about beds and sleep has made me tired – I may go for a quick visit to the Land of Nod whilst Toddler L naps…

N.B. This review was written by me (Dave) and represents my honest opinion of the product. The Miraform divan bed was sent to me by Silentnight (as part of their 2016 Ambassador Programme) with the purpose of writing an honest product review in exchange for the product.
