It’s giveaway time! I’ve teamed up with Playmobil to offer one lucky winner the chance to get their hands on Playmobil’s latest range of Scooby-Doo toys. To enter the giveaway, simply login to Rafflecopter below and follow the instructions. Zoinks!
We’re huge fans of Playmobil in The DADventurer household. We have playsets, vehicles and figures from a number of different ranges, including Summer Fun, Dinos, City Action, City Life, Dollhouse and Ghostbusters. They’re always brilliantly designed, have fantastic attention to detail, are well made and everything is interchangeable to maximise fun, imagination and play.
Over the last month or so, L has seen the TV adverts for the new Playmobil Scooby-Doo toys and has been making some not so subtle hints about her upcoming birthday. So, when I got the chance to receive them for review – and also giveaway a bundle for a lucky reader – it was a total no-brainer. We were sent:
- Playmobil Scooby-Doo – Mystery Machine (70286)
- Playmobil Scooby-Doo – Scooby And Shaggy With Ghost (70287)
- Playmobil Scooby-Doo – Mystery Figures pack (series 1) (70288)
Since receiving the toys, we’ve found them to be a huge hit with both kids and they’ve been played with every day – this goes for each child playing with them individually as well as playing with them together, which is fab to see. Obviously the 5+ age range is more suited to L, and as she’s familiar with the characters, she’s had loads of fun using her imagination to create her own made up scenarios or replicating those she’s seen on TV.
Although significantly younger than the advised 5+ age, ‘Beetle’ has been comfortably and confidently playing with Playmobil for a good six months now. As such, he’s been very excited to get his hands on new toys and has enjoyed playing with the cars and figures in his own way, i.e. bundling everyone in the “new bus” and then pushing it around the house as he says words like “adventure”, “stuck” and “crash”.
Mystery Machine Set (70286)
As their main mode of transport, The Mystery Machine is pivotal in helping Mystery Inc. travel around the world solving crimes. As such, Playmobil has immortalised the iconic blue, green and orange panel van by creating their own miniature playset version. What’s more, it also comes with crew members Fred, Daphne and Velma, as well as a selection of mystery solving accessories, to give a large 72 piece playset.
On opening the box, we found a number of plastic bags containing various elements of the playset, along with the main body of the vehicle. There was also the instruction booklet, stickers for each of the characters and a Playmobil tool to use during assembly.
Putting together the set is pretty straightforward thanks to the instructions, however it can be a little fiddly and the 5-year old did need some adult assistance. Assembly basically consisted of adding small details to the chassis, including wing mirrors, stickers, rear seating, the monitor panel (with 1 x AAA battery), roof bars and wheels.
Once the vehicle was complete, a few of the accessories required assembly. This included putting clothes onto the characters, lids onto the drinks, the hot dog in the bun, the strap on the camera and stickers on the Scooby Snacks, ghost index cards and hand-held GPS device. Total assembly time was no more than 20 minutes, which was important considering how much the kids wanted to play!
Although not jam-packed with features, The Mystery Machine – with its distinctive paint job and name emblazoned on the side – is a pretty cool toy capable of providing hours of entertainment. In terms of what it can do, there’s double rear doors, a sliding side door and removable roof panel, which all provide access to the back of the vehicle.
Inside the rear, there’s two single seats for the figures, as well as a bench that can be folded up and down. There’s also some kind of gun (?) which clips in, as well as the monitor block – the idea of the latter being that characters can light up and read the ghost index cards by pressing one of the buttons (battery required).
There’s also a removable cab section at the front which can be taken off to allow access to the driver and passenger seats. This area sits two figures, plus there’s space to place the two cups into holders. Both kids really like it and I’ve been impressed too – my only annoyance is how often the toddler takes off the side door and asks me to put it back on!
The playset also comes with the figures of Fred, Daphne and Velma, which, when combined with the separate Scooby and Shaggy playset (more on that below), allows you to bring together the full Mystery Inc. team. Each Playmobil figure provides a good resemblance of the original, has moving arms, legs and head and comes with a clothing accessory (skirts and collar).
Finally, there’s a number of accessories which can be used with the characters to help with their adventures. This includes a torch, a camera, a map, a GPS device, three ghost index cards and a box to place them in. Due to the gangs love of food, you’ll also find a slice of pizza, hot dog, donut, drinks and Scooby Snacks.
The Mystery Machine playset retails at £49.99 and can be bought from a number of places including Argos, Smyths and Amazon.
Scooby And Shaggy With Ghost Set (70287)
As the name suggests, this playset consists of Scooby, Shaggy and a ghost – or, to be more accurate, a man who can be dressed up as a ghost. This allows the kids to own and play with the two main characters, or alternatively provides the opportunity for an add on by combining with The Mystery Machine playset above.
On opening the box, we found a couple of different packets which contained the various characters and accessories. Although the figures were already put together, a small amount of assembly was required – this included fitting Scooby’s dog collar, putting the ghost outfit on the man, assembling the burger and rope, as well as sticking on a couple of stickers. Five minutes tops and it was done.
Again, there was a strong resemblance between the original cartoon characters and Playmobil’s Scooby-Doo and Shaggy figures. I was particularly impressed with their portrayal of the Great Dane, who comes with a movable mouth and legs. When combined with the clear stand plate, this dexterity allows the character to stand on two or four legs.
The ghost is a two-piece ensemble which clicks onto the male figure included in the set. Thanks to the wonders of Playmobil, this means that any figure – apart from Scooby (!) – can wear the ghost costume. A cool little feature of the outfit is that it can glow in the dark, which adds an extra touch of spooky to imaginative play.
Also included in the 22 piece set is a few accessories, namely a torch, a rope, a burger, Scooby Snacks and another ghost index card, which can be used in The Mystery Machine.
The Scooby And Shaggy With Ghost playset retails at £12.99 and can be bought from a number of places including Argos, Smyths and Amazon.
Mystery Figures Pack (series 1) (70288)
You can add to your Scooby-Doo collection with the purchase of separate Playmobil Mystery Figures packs. There are 12 different ghosts to collect in total (Series 1), all of which have appeared in one of the TV shows or films over the years.
On opening our packet, we found it to contain the dismembered figure of Zen Tuo, who made an appearance in an episode way back in 1970. The dismemberment wasn’t supposed to be part of his look though as it transpired that the figure just needed a bit of assembly.
This was a quick – albeit slightly fiddly – process and involved clicking the legs, torso, arms, head and hat together. Each ghost in a pack also comes with a couple of accessories. Zen Tuo had a staff and a self-titled ghost index card, which can be used with The Mystery Machine monitor. It also comes with a sticker of the ghost in the pack.
Each Mystery Figures pack retails at £2.99 and can be bought from a number of places including Argos, Smyths and Amazon.
